What a week! I spent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday talking my mom down from the rafters. See, her right eye has been wonky for awhile and she finally got into a specialist and the doctor told her her retina is detaching and made an appointment to see another specialist in Green Bay, WI. Well, to make a very long story short she needs surgery to repair the retina. The first thing I had to calm her down about was the cost of the surgery (and had to do it again after seeing the doctor in Green Bay). Thankfully, her brother has offered to help pay for it (it's going to cost around $10,000). She doesn't have health insurance and has too much money (owns her own house and two cars) and is too young (she just turned 59) to get any aid.

Now though, my boss is being a real pain in the butt about giving me the time off. Another supervisor has agreed to switch days off with me, so I only need Thursday off (the surgery is 11:30 am on Wednesday and my mom wants to stay overnight on Tuesday and needs to stay over Wednesday for a check-up on Thursday). My boss is extremely hard to get ahold of in the summer, so I asked a day shift supervisor to tell her about my requests if she called (for switching and a personal day) and her response was "Well, she'll just have to wait until I can look at the schedule." Hello! This was Friday and she won't be in until Monday and I'm scheduled to have Monday off (but I'd be working if the switch is approved). GRRRRRRRR!

Our power went off last night after thunderstorms went through. A few trees came down up the road and they didn't get the power on until this morning. To top that off it was the hottest day of the year, in the 90s with high humidity. It was so uncomfortable. I slept horribly. I don't know how the old-timers did it. No wonder they died so young, especially the woman with their long sleeves, corsets, and skirts with layers of petticoats underneath. Thank goodness it's back on this morning.

I just got a letter today about the job interview. It just said that my portfolio was available for pick-up and it was up to the Superintendent's office who goes forward. Evidently I didn't make it through to round two because I didn't get called from the Superintendent. No surprise because part of the score was the video and I didn't have any because we weren't allowed to video in my placement. It was a good bit of traveling time and I know my dad's probably releaved because he didn't want me taking it because the roads are rural and horrible in winter. Just have to keep sending in applications. Weird thing was the letter was dated May 25th and my interview was June 6th. I think they already had a decision made before the interviews. They usually do, but have to go forward because of policy.

Aww Jo - I'm sorry.

Dobbygirl, how can they be so stupid? It's not like you have a choice, you've got to help your mom out - do they want you to call in sick instead?

And I love you, I love you, I love you.

Ach Jo - I'm sorry to hear that - thats rotten - and you think they had already had the decision made. Nasty rotters!
Dobbygirl - wow - I have been in a similar situation once - the truth in my case was that the people just didn't care and didn't want to help. You are being too nice. Call in sick next time... It's a horrible world when people are like that. Sometimes people want to be treated as they expect to be treated, if you know what I mean...

Well, I warned my co-workers that is she didn't give me the time off, I would be calling in sick. The next day, another supervisor talked to my boss again and apparently my boss didn't realize that it was already the next week that I needed the time off. My boss isn't the most observant person in the world. Plus, from what my co-worker said, she was already in quite the bad mood when my time off request was made (not that that excuses her reaction, it's just the way she is).

Jo, you think the least they could do is put a later date on the letter. If for no other reason than to appear to be open minded.

I kind of know how that making up their mind before even doing interviews goes though. At the casino, they have a policy of hiring Native Americans (especially tribal members) over everyone else. So, if you hear about a Native putting in for a position, they usually get it. Some managers have managed to wrestle some control back though (Security you must pass a written test, Dealing you must pass a math test).

Just popping in to say hello to everyone.

Jo, sorry about the job thing--Sarah had that happen with an interview, and that was after the interviewer pretty much told her she had the job. But same thing--the letter was dated before they ever saw her. Oh, well--she has a job now that she likes even better, so it was a good thing. And you have had more than your share of bad weather this year. I always liked thunderstorms but not the scary kind with trees coming down.

dobbygirl, that's rotten that your boss is so uncooperative. I hope your mom is doing well. That's always scary to have operations on your eyes--sounds like it's a good thing she has you there.

Bee, sounds like you are going to have a great time. I don't know about driving in New York, but driving in Seattle is only a little better than driving in Los Angeles, apparently. So, as we're used to that, we don't usually get too fussed about driving in other cities. New York, however, just sounds terrifying to me.

I was scrolling back a few pages and ran across the nightmares about book 7. I don't even want to think about it. I just keep telling myself that everything is going to go perfectly--no one will come into day camp blabbing about some east coast news story before I leave to go to Barnes and Noble, I'll get my book and head for home and a nice pot of tea and some sort of snacks to get me through. Oh, and they WILL find someone to stay at the overnight in my place. I've no idea who, I just know it's not going to be me. Because that's what I'll do if I have to stay and can't go pick up my book--which is not going to come in two installments two years apart. Ugh, that would be a nightmare.

I wonder what happens if you didn't take the second one? Probably won't be allowed to take the third. Oh well, I was really hoping for a little hint or two from Jo, knowing perfectly well that that wouldn't happen.

I did feel a bit like Hermione before I took my WOMBAT. I was looking up all sorts of things on the Lexicon about dragons, goblins, giants and History of Magic--LOL. Like it did any good. I finally quit when I realized that I'd spent over an hour and a half and wasn't anywhere near being done taking notes--yes, taking notes. *shakes head* I'm such a nerd sometimes.

So anyway, I took it, and we'll see how I did. Some questions seemed easy (but probably weren't) and others seemed incredibly hard. I did refrain from copying down the questions and my answers, though, so at least I'm spared going back over everything and worrying about it. It's done, and now I just have to wait. I don't remember how long it took to get the results before, or whether none of the results were sent out until after the door was closed.

I am officially a Harry Potter Dunce - and not because of the WOMBATs. One friend called me to ask could he come to visit from Germany on the 21st and I said "oh yes, I'm not doing anything that weekend". What an idiot am I? I completely forgot! He will arrive around midday, so I could stay up all night reading it, but I have to pick him up at an airport a good distance away (because Cork airport has so few flights - expensive charges) so it'll mean 1 1/2 hours driving.
I think a plan is coming to me - perhaps I could stay overnight somewhere near the airport, start reading at midnight, and then I'd be finished for 12... Hmmm. But then I would be wrecked tired and not fit to entertain. I'm such a fool! I need that banging head against computer smiley now!!!
thats me with a dunces hat!

Aww, that sucks gimu! Are you collecting him from Shannon? You could stay at my house! Except that I'll be on another continent, but I'm sure my mam wouldn't mind. She'd be only too happy to have some stranger from the internets come over and gigglegaspsob over some book all night.

I don't want to take the WOMBAT. I'll faiiiiiiiiiil. I used to be such a good little fan, but I haven't re-read the books in yonks.

I know Cork has few fights, our airline company cancelled them all and then offered us Dublin flights (well, THAT helps!).

I'm depressed. Seriously.

I currently sleep on the couch of a tiny, damp house, together with about 200 slugs. I'm desperate for a better house, but I can't afford one. Then an ideal one came up 2 weeks ago. It's HUGE and old, and wonderful. I immediately rang the agency renting it out, and said I wanted to see it straightaway. They said they had no time, and that I couldn't see it until Friday, almost a week later. I was in Manchester, but made appointment anyway. Spent the morning travelling there, I was 5 minutes late (damn train) and the woman had left! Made another appt for Tuesday. Saw the house. Said I was interested, but I'd need to measure up the washing machine to see if it'd fit in the airing cupboard. Made an appt for today to do so.

They rang me this morning to say they'd given the house to somebody else. They messed me around for TWO WEEKS (losing me a day's work while I was travelling to and fro in vain), KNEW I was interested, and still gave it to somebody else.

I'll never find another place. There are houses the size of the one I'm living in going for a much higher rent than that house was going for.

Thanks for the offer Bee, but unfortunately the airport is Kerry airport - has anyone even heard of it before? It literally is a room with a runway. Starling, they fly to London and manchester from Kerry - not sure where you're flying from.. There are also flights to Lorient and Frankfurt Hahn!
I suppose I will just have to avoid the media that weekend. Gary will be back from the US that weekend so he can help me cope!!
My friend does know about my Harry Potter obsession, so now he will think he is extra special since I have put the book aside for the weekend with him...

Oh yeah, it's in Farranfore. I've seen signs for it - it seems to be out the country a bit outside Killarney. Probably just a runway plonked in the middle of a field. Still, at least it's closer to you than Shannon or Dublin.

Starling, that sucks so much about the house!

Too bad, Starling. Housing prices are outrageous anywhere. I'd love to rebuild my house. It's about 150 years old, small, the plaster is coming down, and it needs completely gutted. The borough I live in is horrible, though, for building and remodeling.

Ohh, I got the crap scared out of me. The other night around 11pm I was getting into my car at home, which is like I said very woody, and I hear a loud sound that was combination between a screetch and a hiss coming from behind the house. I didn't know whether to run up the stairs to the house or jump in the car. Luckily the car was unlocked and I hoped in. I think it was a possum. But it was quite scary at the time.

Hey everyone! Just popping in to let you know my mom's surgery went extremely well. They didn't have to put her under full anestesia (sp?), just a light sedation. She fell right to sleep, doesn't remember a thing. The only problem was she had a bad reaction to the pain medication they prescribed (it was oxycodone and Tylenol). She was extremely nauseous and dizzy. The on call doctor gave me medication to help with that and told her to just take plain Tylenol for any pain. Everyone at the clinic was so nice to us. She needs to go back on the 25th for a check-up. And until then, she's a couch potato. She can watch TV, read, and play on the computer.

The only thing that went wrong is the AC in my car isn't working and the temps were in the 90's. We sweated our butts off on the drive there and back. Hopefully it'll be fixed before the 25th (I made an appointment for Monday, the 18th).

That's good news, Dobbygirl. Hope she gets better soon.

I am a speckled girl, and not because of freckles. I was priming the hallway ceiling and now have white speckles all over my hands and some on my face. I'm hoping it's not in my hair because it will look like dandruff. I hate oil-based primer, but I needed it to cover the plaster. It does not clean up easily. I'm painting the next coat with latex, which I like much more. I actually enjoy house painting, but I couldn't find my paint guard roller that has a splatter cover so I was using a regular roller. Tomorrow the ceiling gets painted white and the walls yellow. It's an enclosed staircase so I wanted something bright.

Hi guys. So who heard about the fire? I understand it made national news.
There was a large fire at a furniture store/warehouse about 5 minutes from our house last night. As we left Tai Chi, we saw nasty black smoke-- knew it had to be a fire. Initally we thought it might be our mall, but then realised it was too far to the east. Still no idea what started it. Found out this morning that 9 firefighters were killed. Feel so badly for their famiies.

It's always horrible to hear about those types of fires. We just had a fire around here that had five kids under eight years old were killed in a fire, two survived. Originally the mothers of the kids said there was a babysitter, but the cops have said there was none.

I'm so glad the U.S. Open is finally over. Everyday on the news was about Tiger Woods. Most were rooting for Furick, a local, to win but he ended up in third place.

AMC, seems like Cowher is in talks with a few teams for coaching next year. The Browns are one of them. He used to play for them so I could see him going there. I think the other major choice is Miami. I just can't imagine how loud Heinz Field would be with boos if Cowher came back coaching Cleveland. That would be the ultimate stake through the heart to Pittsburgh fans. He would never be forgiven, even if he did coach a Superbowl team.

Looks like there is a major investigation going on about that fire. Apparently there are questions as to why there were 9 firefighters in the building when it collapsed. I had heard that they were attempting to evacuate/rescue trapped people, but that may have been merely an assumption. The warehouse area at the back of the building was a metal structure-- fire was so hot it melted the walls.
