It's refreshing to know the U.S. isn't the only place having this running debate over "welfare queens" as they're often called here. And Britain doesn't even have the religious right going on about Family Values.

Personally, I agree with JKR on this, though perhaps with a caveat. To begin with, there is no point in giving a 150 pound tax credit to families. That won't change anyone's behavior. Promoting two-parent families is nonsense. The real issue is discouraging young women from having babies for the sake of collecting benefits and with no ambition to ever become productive members of society. This is where I take a more Tory stance. But rather than throwing money at two-parent families, the government needs to focus on the unwed mothers. Leave the moralizing out of it and develop a welfare-to-work" program with financial incentives for women to refrain from having more babies, go to school and move into the workforce.
