One of the most important of DD's decisions is, I think, that he decided not to give Harry the resurrection stone to start with.
Had Harry received the resurrection stone at the beginning he could have called DD back from the dead and receive substantial help.
Of course, DD wanted Harry to work out things on his own, but still...

I wonder whether there was also some egoism on DD's part: maybe DD wanted to continue on his great adventure and did not want to be disturbed...

But he stuck around to be available to Harry at Kings' Cross, so I'm not sure that explanation really holds true. But just giving Harry the stone would have made things too simple in this book's incredibly complicated plot. We got easy answers to the mystery of the horcruxes (just read Voldie's mind) and substituted the difficult hunt to figure out the Hallows.

True, but we still don't know whether it was truly DD at Kings' Cross

Hmm. I never considered that it wasn't DD that Harry was talking to. I guess it could have been just a figment of Harry's mind, but it seemed he had too much information that Harry didn't already know for it to be that. I think DD stuck around so that he could let Harry know that he had the choice to go back--that he didn't have to stay dead.

Oh, and he needed to stick around so we could get our last, great infodump!
