I found the apple-corer Other Half bought, a couple of days ago so the novelty of that is currently running high.

My living room. It's also my bedroom, because my real bedroom has an ambient temperature below that compatable with human life.

What can you do about mildew?

Do you live in my house, Diri? I don't know what to do about mildew, I've just tried to wipe it off the window frame in my living/bedroom, and it won't come off. The window in the bathroom is black with it. Ewww.

But bleach can help, try that.

What can you do about slugs?

Getting a new cell phone. My new-every-two is available next Monday and I do adore a new electronic doohickey.

Ooh, really delicious bread, toasted, with either my nana's homemade plum jam (to die for!) or some good quality raspberry jam (I am with Dumbledore in this respect). Or even Tasmanian leatherwood honey, which is delicious. Oh, and a mug of Earl Grey tea.

Damn I love breakfast. Which is your favourite meal?

I'm always exited about the Oscars, although actually watching them can be tedious.

I think The Departed will win Best Director, which means it will probably win Best Picture too, although if it doesn't, The Queen will.

Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren have the "leading role" Oscars locked.

Supporting Actor is hard to call; it usually goes to the one with the longest career, so I may actually astound myself by predicting an Eddie Murphy win.

Supporting Actress is harder, although unlike Supporting Actor it usually goes to debutantes, so maybe Dreamgirls will get a twofer and Jennifer Hudson will take it.

Pixar would have a lock on Animated Feature in any other year, but they just won two years back (for "The Incredibles") and the year before that (for "Finding Nemo"), and "Cars" was not up to their usual standard, so I think Happy Feet will get this one

Pan's Labyrinth has the Foreign Film oscar locked, stocked and barrelled.

Adapted Screenplay could either be "The Departed" or "Notes on a Scandal". It usually goes to more literary adaptations so "Notes on a Scandal" will probably get it.

Babel or Little Miss Sunshine are the most likely for Original Screenplay, and I think that the narrative complexity of Babel may give it an edge over Sunshine's wit.

If "An Inconvenient Truth" doesn't win Best Documentary, I will boycott the Academy for the rest of my natural life.

Now for the minors:

Art direction: A tough call, but I'd say "Pan's Labyrinth" (Though I think "The Prestige" was better)

Cinematography: "Children of Men" won a very well deserved British Academy Award for this, and, if there was any justice, it would walk away with the Oscar too.

Costume design: With Merchant Ivory gone, this category's harder to predict, but my instincts say "Dreamgirls"

Editing: Another tough call; editing is not a respected craft and usually the Academy just dumps this award on the Best Picture winner to bulk up its list. But done well, editing can be great art, and this year contains a number of contenders (United 93, Children of Men, Babel) that actually deserve to be nominated. United 93 won the BAFTA for this and I think it deserves to win the Oscar.

Makeup: Always easy to pick this one: Pan's Labyrinth, no contest

Music: Babel won the Bafta for this, and it'll probably with the Oscar

Song: It'll probably be from Dreamgirls, but since there are two noms from Dreamgirls I have no idea which one to pick.

Sound editing and Sound mixing: Hard to call. I don't think Academy has the courage to allow Apocalypto to put Oscar winner on its marquees after what Mel Gibson said in that car, so I think the more PC Flags of Our Fathers will get them.

Visual Effects: Pirates. No contest. Did you even know Davey Jones was entirely computer generated?

Animated short/Live action short/Documentary short: These are impossible to call.

What will you give me if I get all my predictions right?

I love driving. I don't get to do it much anymore. In fact the only cars I'm in most of the time now are cabs (which is getting a bit pricey, but it's much too cold to walk).

Do you use public transportation?

I used to practically live on the bus, but since I started driving, I can't face the horrible, cramped smelliness of it anymore. I still take the train for long journeys though and I love taking the tram when I'm in Dublin.

Do you own a car? If so, what kind?

Ish. My family has a third car that is mostly for my sister's and my use. But, since I don't live at home anymore (most of the time) my sister is the only one driving it. And technically it's not mine it's my family's. Anyway, it's '96 Volkswagen Golf and is falling apart at the seams.

Can you use a stick shift?

Yes, it's my favorite way to drive. But all the newer cars over here are automatics anymore, unless they're souped-up sportscars.

Babysitting. I didn't really work too hard through high school, but I did make and easy $20-$40 almost every weekend babysitting. What's kind of depressing is the little girl I used to watch is now legally an adult.

Is there any housework that you actually enjoy doing?

That depends on what you use it for, doesn't it? I'm basically on it all day. I use it to read the news (on the Times site), and for downloading and uploading work, doing research for translations, reading my own forums, mailing and PMming Ruth, doing sudokus, etc. It replaces a lot of stuff I'd otherwise have done by phone, fax or by looking things up in books/newspapers. I think you're only hooked if you surf mindlessly all day.

Yes. Growing up it wasn't unusual to eat breakfast foods for dinner. I was actually going to make pancakes last night for dinner, but ended up cooking pork chops and eggs instead.

What is something good for dinner? I'm in a cooking rut.
