Click the spoiler threads if you like to be teased but not really spoiled. It's a fun discussion but using the spoiler tags is getting old fast. I can't wait until Saturday!

Dobbygirl, I'm avoiding the spoiler threads, too, but I have clicked on them. Everyone looks like their having so much fun and I'm trying so valiantly not to highlight the spoiler text, but it's hard! I'm a weak individual. I have no self-control with some things. I did look at the first seven chapter titles, but I forget most of them now.

Oh, I have to get my SS book out. The chapter where we're introduced to Snape in the classroom is chilling.

*runs upstairs to grab book*
*runs back downstairs with book*
*puffs from being out of breath*

First of all his description is creepy:

His eyes were black like Hagrids, but they had none of Hagrid's warmth. They were cold and empty and make you think of dark tunnels.

Then there is his little speech:

"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion making," he began. He spoke in barely more than a whisper, but they caught every word--like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort. "As there is little foolish wand waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human viens, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses...I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death -- if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."

That stopper death thing has always been in the back of my mind.
Then we have:

"For your information Potter, asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons. As for monkshood and wolfsbane, they are the same plant, which also goes by the name of aconite."

Okay, we've seen these all but the Draught of Living Death! The bezoar when Ron was poisoned and the wolfsbane when Remus was taking his potion. Doesn't that cause you to naturally assume that we'll see the Draught of the Living Death at some point in the series. I just hope if we do, it isn't some Romeo and Juliet thing. (I really disliked that play...I didn't find it romantic, just two impulsive selfish young teenage kids who couldn't come up with a better plan.)

Oh Jo! You have no romance in your soul! Okay, so I really don't like tragedies in general, either. People behave so badly and so stupidly they pretty much ask for what's coming to them. You just want to smack them - kind of like in OotP. The draught of living death, eh? I can't imagine where that comes in.

Okay, I am dying to discuss the chapter titles and as clever as the Invisibilty cloak is - it's too annoying. I'm going to start a thread for spoilers - real spoilers, no cloaking!

I'm thinking (dangerous, I know), didn't Harry & Co. make the Draught of the Living Death during his first potions class with Slughorn? I'm pretty sure they did; it called for soporphous beans, and I love that word: soporphous. And the potion that stoppers death: if I'm not mistaken, this refers to the Elixir of Life, which makes great sense considering that this was the very year Voldemort lived on the back of Quirrel's head, plotting to steal the SS/PS so he could grab a bunch of this very potion for himself.

But that description of Snape and his little speech at the beginning of class are so spectacularly creepy ... I just can't believe it's all misdirection. I love the idea that he's one highly dangerous, nasty dude for real. If that's all just some trick of Harry's biased perception, I admit I'll be a bit disappointed. I want my Snape with real fangs and eyes that are tunnels to blackness in his soul, thanks. Then if he finally actually does something good, it'll mean more. So Jo, do you still think he'll "pull a Carton?"

Pixie, why on earth would it be misdirection? Snape is dangerous and nasty. As for his eyes being tunnels into darkness, the guy lives in hell, so that fits.

Oh, I agree! But so many people out there are saying that we can't trust descriptions like that because they are run through Harry's filter of perception, and Harry hates Snape, so everything looks that much worse than it is to him, and is threfore presented as so much worse than it is to us. I don't buy into this idea at all -- Jo's pretty good at warning us of the times the "Harry Goggles" are on by the way she writes. But the rest of the time (which is by far most of the time) I think her descriptions are sincere. What a waste of great writing it would be if they weren't. Vive le Nasty Snape!

Yes, more polls! I got a few minutes to play and had to pass up all the major discussions because I don't want any spoilers. They probably don't give much away, but I'm so close and I want to savor it all--because after this all we're left with is fanfiction. Which isn't all bad, but it's not Canon.

Yeah, I still think they're very similar characters. Do I think Snape is going to take Harry's place with Voldemort in the end as Carton did with Darnay? No way, but they're similar characters. Remember Sydney Carton was a horrible man. An alcholic who had nobody in his life. He even remarked about trying to turn his life around and just couldn't do it, but then told Lucy he'd do anything for her...and in the end of the story he did. Who is Snape's "Lucy" is in this story? I don't know. I don't think it's necessarily romantic love. Maybe it's Dumbledore, maybe it's Lily. But even though I see the parallels between Carton and Snape, that doesn't mean I like the man. He's still a horrible person no matter what side he's really on.

"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known".

Can you imagine these words attributed to Snape? He really hasn't lived an exemplary life, but maybe these words might be fitting in the end.

Like I said though, he's still evil.
