There's a British comedy show called "Room 101", in which celebrities are asked to list their worst fears and pet hates, and convince the host, Paul Merton, to deem them worthy of being thrown into Room 101.

One of his pet hates, it turns out, is "education." It appears there's entirely too much of it these days. When he was a lad, no one dreamed of going to university, and now it seems every bloody village has got one, and now it's meaningless. Plus it's everywhere, on the news day in day out. He also hates make-up girls, and claims he has to wear a sock over his Dumbledore beard to eat food.

He also collects lathes. He's got 15

There used to be a time when it wasn't beneath people not to go to university. Honestly, so what if you don't know your hypothenuse from your Pythagoras? Do something you can do! My cousin is severely dyslexic. If she'd had to suffer the British school system, she'd be working at the tills at Wallmart. Instead, she went to a school specialising in furniture making, and now she's an excellent carpenter and furniture maker.

Which, um, has nothing to do with MG.

I wonder what he does with all those lathes ...

I've always said I don't care if my children become professors or plumbers as long as they do something they care deeply about and they give it their best... in fact, having a good plumber in the family would be wonderful, they could support us in our old age. Education is important, it's wonderful and it's one of the finest advantages of a civilized society. But it isn't everything.

Incidentally, the sock-over-the-beard schtick reminds me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers who used to perform on stage wearing only tube socks.. and the socks were not worn on their feet. Amazingly useful things, socks - perhaps Dobby and Dumbledore are onto something.

Higher education is not all it's cracked up to be. I know people who have gotten degrees and come out of university completely unable to deal with real life. A piece of paper doesn't mean a thing. When my husband applied for a tech position at work, they had him (and everyone else) take a test to gauge their knowledge. He tested just as high as the people who had degrees and he's never been to college. He's all self taught. He got the promotion.
